HTC Desire vs. HTC Legend display detail
There is a confusion about AMOLED displays after Google Nexus One mobile phone appeared with so called PenTile subpixel layout. While the phone has addressable display resolution of 800x480 pixels, there is fewer than three subpixels for one such pixel. This is documented here: http://www.metalev.org/2010/03/more-on-resolution-of-nexus-one-display.html.
HTC Legend display detail
This is macro image of coworker's HTC Legend which comes with AMOLED display. The HTC Legend display has specified resolution of 480x320 pixels. In this case the PenTile layout was not used - it uses classic RGB layout like most current LCD Monitors. Here is a detailed picture of the display I took to see the layout:
HTC Desire display detail
This is macro image of my HTC Desire which also comes with AMOLED display. The HTC Legend display has specified resolution of 800x480 pixels. In this case the PenTile layout was is used so real resolution is lower. Here is a detailed picture of the display I took to see the layout:
To get big picture of what I have captured, here is another photo with less magnification. This is HTC Desire (just time changed a bit).
Both detailed pictures above can be assumed to have approximatelly same magnification.
Display detail comparison using web pages
Some people on discussion boards have complained that greys look a bit of pink, for example on HTC web site. I have took a picture of both HTC Legend and Desire (both at full brightness) of two websites. The first is a Czech version of HTC web site, the second is root.cz site. I do recognize a slight pink tint on my Desire and also on the coworker's Legend. But at this level of inaccuracy it is no problem for me. It might be a problem for you as there could be several differences, including: eye perception, the actual display hardware, and the firmware version. In both pictures the HTC Legend is on left side, HTC Desire on right side.
